A Quick Video Review of the MK25/S600 Regulator
Below is a quick video review of the regulator done by the guys over at Simplyscuba.com. In the video, you can get a closer look at the regulator and some of its features.
Let’s Take A Closer Look At The First Stage
Scubapro says that the Mk25 is their top performing first stage regulator, and uses a balance piston to deliver ultra stable intermediate pressure to the second stage, resulting in a consistent performance at any tank pressure and depth.
What does this mean to you, the diver? Because the Mk25 delivers more air to the second stage than any other regulator, it will perform the same in demanding dive conditions making it perfect for recreational and professional divers alike.
The tired diver also benefits from a smoother breathing regulator during the ascent or deco stop as well.
It also features five low-pressure ports on a 360 degrees swiveling turret (four on the side and 1 on top) for optimum hose routing. This feature also helps reduce jaw fatigue by reducing the tension on the low-pressure hoses.
Two high-pressure ports are located on either side of the reg. This allows you to position the gauges either on the right or left side and increases the freedom of movement for head and neck.
Although this first stage is not environmentally sealed, Scubapro also claims that the regulator will perform just as good in cold water diving conditions. This is due to:
- Scubapro Patented TIS System – Metal components inside the regulator are specially designed to restrict ice crystal from forming on them, hence preventing freezing and the overall malfunction of the regulator.
- Heat Sink – The ribs on the exterior of the first stage act as a radiator to increase the surface area of heat transfer from the water to warm up the internal parts that have been drastically cooled by the drop in pressure when you breathe from the regulator.
The first Stage also comes equipped with an externally adjustable intermediate pressure, which allows technicians to quickly fine tune it without the need to disassemble the first stage.
Now Let’s Look At Some Of The Features Of The Second Stage
Because of a balanced second stage slightly offsets the force of the downstream air entering the second stage, it reducing the tension on the spring making it effortless to breathe from the second stage.
A control knob on the side also allows you to adjust the inhalation effort of the second stage. In the “Max” position it allows the regulator to perform at its optimum performance. Turning the Knob to the “Min” position puts more tension on the spring, resulting in lower air flow rate, which is great for diving in cold water condition, and help prevent free flow while diving in heavy currents. The Knob is also big enough to be easily operated even while wearing thick gloves.
The S600 is also equipped with Scubapro’s patent Venturi Initiated Vacuum Assist (VIVA). The VIVA switch in the “Max” position creates a vacuum in the second stage that greatly reduces inhalation efforts. The VIVA switch in the “Min” position will help prevent free flow on the surface or when it is used as an octopus.
The second stage also comes with Scubapro’s orthodontic mouthpiece which helps prevent jaw fatigue by reducing the bite pressure needed to hold the regulator in place.
Other Version Of The MK25 S600
The Scubapro Mk25/S600 is now available in 4 other versions, the MK25/S600 Black Tech, the Mk 25/S600 Deep Blue, the Titanium MK25/s600, and the new MK25 EVO/S600.
Each version offers their own unique cosmetics, coating, and construction material, but they all have one thing in common – awesome performance.
Scubapro Mk25/S600 Black Tech
The Black Tech is basically identical to the standard MK25/S600 and packs the same great performance. However, Instead of a chrome finish, it has a black PVD that gives a more tech look to the regulator.
The PVD is not only for cosmetics it offers greater scratch resistance than your standard chrome finish which can scratch pretty easy especially if you are diving in the tight spaces of caves and wrecks.
Scubapro MK25/S600 Deep Blue
This version still packs all the same performance you would expect for the Mk25/S600. However, the S600 second stage has been made super lightweight and more corrosion resistance by using an Interior Titanium Valve Barrel.
It also has jewel-colored deep blue PVD finish. Not only does the PVD finishing look great, it also provides better scratch and corrosion resistance than standard chrome regulators.
Scubapro MK25T/S600T Titanium
This system also offers the same performance as its brass versions but in a super lightweight package.
The Mk25T first stage body and components are made from lightweight corrosion resistant titanium. The second stage has also been upgraded with a titanium trim ring and plate.
Scubapro MK25 EVO/S600
The MK25 EVO is designed with Scubapro’s new Extended Thermal Insulating System (XTIS) which fully isolates the important internal mechanisms from the environment. This greatly improves the ability of the regulator to resist freezing in colder water, without sacrificing its overall performance.
With this technology, the EVO can withstand 30 percent colder water than the traditional MK25.
What Other Divers Are Saying About the Scubapro MK25 S600
The overall feedback on this regulator are excellent, there is hardly any negative review to report. Many divers find that the regulator is very easy to breathe from, in any position, whether they were inverted or upside down, and performed flawlessly at deep depths and low tank pressures.
The only complaint I was able to find was the price, this is not a cheap regulator, however, if you can afford it, you cannot go wrong with this reg, even if you are just starting out.
Below are snippets of user reviews I have found on the internet.
“I have the same regulator with over 200 dives and now my wife has one because of the great experience I’ve had with mine. I’ve used it in the waters off Alaska to the Cayman’s and down to 150ft and it’s just a solid, smooth regulator with a very comfortable mouthpiece.”
“Dove this reg below 180 many times, right-side up, inverted and upside down it doesn’t matter this is my go to reg. A must have even for the most novice diver!”
“I’ve done about 20 dives on this reg. It works great. For what Lesiure Pro charges it’s a great deal, for what the shops charge – it’s probably an average high-end regulator. Wether I’m upside down, sideways, low on air, or deep, (I’ve had it to 135 fsw) it breaths effortlessly.”
“This is an awesome regulator. I personally like to tighten up the breathing because it lengthens my bottom time. THis can breathe real tight or simply flow – however you like it, you can set it. I would not trade it for anything else, my life depends on it so I got the best! I used it and I loved it.”
The Bottom Line
The Mk25/S600 is a top-performing regulator, and offer exceptional breathing at recreational depth but still have the capacity to perform when pushed to the extremes. Each version of this regulator offers its own style but still deliver the same awesome performance.
